Suvarnabhumi » Deputy Prime Minister opposes Suvarnabhumi province plan
Tuesday, September 4th, 2007Deputy Prime Minister Pridiyathorn Devakula today said he opposes the plan to set up a province surrounding Suvarnabhumi Airport, saying that the area should be left alone as a flood-prevention area for Bangkok.
“There are a lot of retention ponds in the area and water experts said they serve as waterways, allowing floods to flow to the sea, if there are buildings, they will obstruct water from flowing out, and cause the inner city to flood.” said Pridiyathorn.
The Deputy Prime Minister said the water issue was a question of city planning, not a matter of using the waterway for transportation.
“If the Department of Town and Country Planning proposes to build a community in the area, I’ll oppose it,” said MR Pridiyathorn. “Suvarnabhumi Airport was built with the aim of keeping it away from the community, so why do we want to build a new one close to it?”
MR Pridiyathorn this morning received Secretary General of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Taïeb Cherif at Government House. According to MR Pridiyathorn, Mr Cherif gave him feedback on the new airport, and said he believed it would serve well as an Asian aviation centre.
MR Pridiyathorn said he still had concerns over the airport. “We built a first-class airport; we need to offer first-class service as well.” For starters, he said 200 toilets are needed.
The Deputy Prime Minister also affirmed that Suvarnabhumi Airport’s service and safety would improve by the end of January 2007.
