Suvarnabhumi » Focus on Safety and Security at Suvarnabhumi Airport
Tuesday, September 4th, 2007Thailand attaches great importance to safety and security at the new Suvarnabhumi Airport. In his keynote address at the 10th East Asia-Pacific Conference on Structural Engineering and Construction on August 3 in Bangkok, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra stated that, as safety and security are uppermost in Thailand’s consideration, further trial runs and operations testing involving international flights are envisaged.
Referring to the first commercial test flights and system tests for Suvarnabhumi Airport on July 29, the Prime Minister said that he and a number of Cabinet members took part in the test flights, which went perfectly. He cited Suvarnabhumi Airport, which will be officially opened this September, as one of the country’s most impressive achievements.
The Prime Minister believes that the new airport will enable airlines to take up the opportunities offered by the liberalization of Thailand’s air travel and thus consolidate its position as an aviation hub in Southeast Asia. He explained that the need for a new Bangkok airport was recognized in 1960. After more than 45 years, and 31 Cabinets and 14 Prime Ministers later, this airport is about to be realized.
Almost all construction activities were completed over the 5-year span since the Thaksin administration took office in 2001. Prime Minister Thaksin pointed out that this achievement was the outcome of the Government’s resolve, as well as the determination of Dr. Srisook Chandrangsu, the present Chair of Airports of Thailand Public Company and an eminent Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) alumnus. However, it is perhaps the achievements on the technical side, including the terminal building and the tallest control tower in the world, that are the most striking hallmarks of this construction project.
Meanwhile, President of Airports of Thailand Public Company Chotisak Asapaviriya said that before Suvarnabhumi Airport will be opened for commercial operations on September 28, domestic flights will begin to offer services at the airport on September 15. Passengers of various domestic flights have been told to check in at Suvarnabhumi from September 15 onwards.
Representing an investment of more than 155 billion baht, Suvarnabhumi Airport occupies an area of 20,000 rai or 3,200 hectares, five times the size of Bangkok International Airport’s present facility. It will become one of the most important world centers for passenger and cargo services. This massive new airport is just 25 kilometers from the city center. With elevated highways already built, access to Suvarnabhumi will be fast and efficient.
