Suvarnabhumi » Thai Airways satisfied with Suvarnabhumi Airport
Wednesday, October 17th, 2007
Following extensive testing, Thai Airways International Plc. (THAI) is content with facilities at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
As part of a soft opening, THAI transferred a few of its domestic flights to Suvarnabhumi Airport on September 15, while keeping most of its operation based at Bangkok International Airport (Don Muang). The routes that made the switch included flights from the capital to Chiang Mai, Phitsanulok and Ubon Ratchathani.
THAI and other carriers will transfer all domestic and international flights to the new airport by September 28, as Don Muang retires as Bangkok’s primary international aviation hub.
In preparation for next week’s opening, THAI will begin producing meals at Suvarnabhumi on September 22. Currently, meals are made at Don Muang and then shipped across town to Suvarnabhumi.
On the first day at the new facility, THAI aims to produce between 500 and 600 set meals for passengers on night flights. The kitchen’s maximum capacity is 85,000 sets per day, according to Pismai Chandrubeksa, managing director of THAI’s Catering Department.
The department currently serves 50 different airlines, including THAI. Pismai said that many potential clients are now inquiring about service.
THAI officials have also announced they will hold a separate farewell party on September 27 for Don Muang, which was built in the 1920s.
“We would like to provide our staff a chance to say good-bye to Don Muang, which has served Thai people for many decades,” said Abhinand.
“Internal assessments shows that our flights are satisfactory, because most of Suvarnabhumi’s systems function pretty well, ranging from check-in to air traffic control,” said Flying Officer Abhinand Sumanaseni, president of THAI. (TNA)
