Board of Thailand Airports has resigned

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

The board of directors of Airports of Thailand has resigned, less than one month after it opened Bangkok’s new Suvarnabhumi international airport, the company said in a statement yesterday.

AOT said in a statement that all of its 14 board members had resigned effective October 18, citing the current changes in the country’s top leadership.

“It is good manners for the board to resign after these political changes, to pave way for the new leaders to appoint a new set of people to work with,” said Chaisak Angkasuwan, the head of the government’s aviation department who is also an AOT board member. A new board will be appointed within one month, he added.

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

As the door slides open to the vast, empty Terminal One building at Don Muang airport, the holiday-makers pause, as if thinking they are about to enter no-man’s land. Ten flights is a busy day at Don Muang now and many staff long for the headier times of the past The trance is broken as an army of beaming staff rush to serve.

”For airport staff, sitting idle is a big shock from the head-spinning, demanding workload of the past,” said Don Muang director Pinit Saraithong. ”It is no surprise that passengers receive such enthusiastic pampering.”

Budget airlines move back to Don Muang rejected

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

Thailand’s aviation authorities on Wednesday rejected a plea by budget air carriers to return their operations to the former Bangkok International Airport at Don Muang, saying that the move would double official expenses to keep two airports in operation.

Department of Aviation director-general Chaisak Angkasuwan said he disagreed with the call from economy airlines to move their operations back to the old airport from the recently opened Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The reduced-fare airlines have reportedly been unhappy with the higher cost they are encountering at the new airport, in particularly the fees for parking aircraft.
