Suvarnabhumi » Airport Link railway system from Bangkok’s inner city to Suvarnabhumi airport - News Update
Tuesday, September 4th, 2007The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is in dire need of 18 billion baht as the payment is due in November for the Airport Link railway system that will connect the city to Suvarnabhumi airport.
Suthon Jetketkan, chief of the SRT’s electric railway office, said the SRT would have to pay 18 billion baht to the creditor bank that financed the 30-billion-baht Airport Link project. The instalment is due on Nov 5. The deadline is the completion date of the 990-day railway construction contract.
Airport Link stretches 28.6km from Makkasan area in the inner city to Suvarnabhumi airport east of Bangkok. It was designed to get between the city and the airport in 15 minutes and to connect with electric railways in the capital.
According to Mr Suthon, Suvarnabhumi Airport Link is almost half complete. The construction is about 30% behind schedule. After the structural construction is completed, the SRT will need another year to install and test the railway system before opening it.
In addition to Suvarnabhumi Airport Link, the SRT plans to install a parallel 78km railway track from Chachoengsao province via Si Racha to Laem Chabang port in Chon Buri province. The project will cost 5.8 billion baht. Also in the pipeline are Bangkok’s 15km Red Line electric railway from Bang Sue to Taling Chan and a rehabilitation plan for the SRT itself. The SRT will conclude plans for the parallel track, the Red Line and financial rehabilitation this week and will send them to the military cabinet for approval.
