Suvarnabhumi » Army joined to protect royals at Suvarnabhumi Airport

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

The First Army will set up a joint administrative unit of the Royal Guards to provide security to Their Majesties the King and Queen and all members of the royal family using Suvarnabhumi airport after its full commercial opening next Thursday. The establishment of the new unit was assigned by the Royal Aide-de-Camp Department.

Army deputy spokesman Lt-Col Sirijan Ngatong said the First Army comprises Royal Guard forces, including the First Infantry Division Royal Guards and the Second Infantry Regiment Royal Guards, better known as the ‘’Queen’s Musketeers'’. They would ensure the safety of the King, the Queen and the royal family.

However, an army source said the joint administrative unit would not be permanently based at the new airport in Samut Prakan’s Bang Phli district, but would go to provide security whenever Their Majesties and the royal family are scheduled to depart on flights. The unit is additional to the security forces prepared by the airport, the source said. (Bangkok Post)
