Duty free shop giant King Power has agreed to remove part of its shop at Suvarnabhumi airport if today’s inspection shows it blocks arriving passengers.
Chief executive officer of King Power Group Vichai Raksriaksorn said the removal would not be a ‘’serious issue” to his company but cautioned that careful consideration should be made before taking any decision.
Company executives and Suvarnabhumi airport general manager Somchai Sawasdeepon will today take a closer look at the troubled spot to jointly find a solution, which should range from a small adjustment to the removal of part of the shop.
The shop is located in the arrival zone for international passengers.
Part of the shop reportedly blocks their way to the nearby immigration checkpoints.
Mr Vichai said his shop was not built only to draw the passengers, but it also served as a landmark to help them easily find the immigration control area.

Airports of Thailand (AOT) president Chotisak Asapaviriya admitted many passengers might get lost at the arrival zone because the immigration sign was not clearly seen.
A consultant company had recommended the airport make the area more easily noticeable so that passengers would not simply walk past, he said.
”But I don’t know whether this should be done by building a shop. All decisions occurred before I took on the job,” Mr Chotisak said.
Mr Vichai said his company had initially solved the complaint by removing some shop signs that blocked the passage of travellers.
He had also told his staff to dim the shop’s light so that it would not disturb passengers’ view of direction signs that show the way to the checkpoints.
However, the shop design still needed to be considered in detail to see whether it was correctly approved, Mr Somchai said.
He said officials would also look into the shop’s extended area, to see if King Power should pay a higher rental fee.
More canteens and toilets would also be built near a small garden near the terminal building to facilitate a number of people, the AOT president said
Meanwhile, AOT is preparing to develop 29 rai of land near the new airport into a parking lot for trucks within two months, and will also increase the car parking area in the bus terminal.
