Suvarnabhumi » Suvarnabhumi Airport to be opened on schedule
Sunday, September 9th, 2007
The Administrative Reform Council (ARC) President General Sonthi Boonyaratkalin confirmed that Suvarnabhumi Airport will begin full domestic and international operation on September 28 as scheduled.
“The ARC will not change plans for the opening of the new airport,” Sonthi said Wednesday after leading a military coup d’etat to overthrow the Thaksin administration.
The ARC was set-up following the coup in order to facilitate the transition towards an interim government and eventually new elections.
Sonthi made his statement regarding the airport in front of representatives from Bangkok-based embassies, consulates and international organisations.
Transport Permanent Secretary Wanchai Sarathulthat added that high ranking officials at the ministry agreed the airport should move forward as planned.
“A large amount of equipment has been moved to the new airport and the world has already been informed of its opening. All systems - including passenger check-in, air traffic control and transportation - have been prepared for full commercial operation,” said Wanchai.
Suvarnabhumi General Manager Somchai Sawasdeepon has also reconfirmed that the new airport is now ready to offer passenger and cargo service.
“I believe that the political situation will not affect our schedule,” said Somchai. (TNA)
