Suvarnabhumi Airport aims for global accolades

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

Within the next two years, the government plans to make Suvarnabhumi Airport, which opens later this month, the best airport in the world.

Deputy Prime Minister and Industry Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit said Wednesday that the airport meets multiple international standards and criteria, including modern administrative and security systems, and ample duty free.

His statements were made while presiding over the opening of both the Suvarnabhumi Airport Media Centre and the International Broadcasting Centre at the Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport hotel.

He also emphasised that tourism will improve following the airport’s opening on September 28.

Don Muang To Become Maintenance Hub

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

Thailand plans to turn the almost-century-old Don Muang International Airport (Current Bangkok International Airport) into an aviation maintenance hub in South-East Asia.

Transport Minister Pongsak Ruktapongpisal said Don Muang would not be closed entirely once the new US$3.7 billion Suvarnabhumi Airport starts full commercial operation on Sept 28.

“Instead, it will be used as a maintenance centre and at the same time caters to charter flights and be a base for Royal Thai Air Force,” he said at a seminar on the new airport, here Tuesday.

He said several airlines were going there gradually, starting with Thai Airways’ (THAI) domestic flights on Friday.

Private sector confident Suvarnabhumi’s cargo hub potential

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

Leading executives are certain that Suvarnabhumi Airport will become Asia’s regional cargo hub, and as a result promote trade in the region.

Vikrom Kromadit, CEO of industrial estate developer Amata Corporation Plc, said the new airport will be a distribution gateway to Thailand and the rest of Asia, with the ability to support commerce brought about by Free Trade Agreements (FTA) between Thailand and major partners, like China and Australia.

Suvarnabhumi Airport’s ability to handle greater cargo capacity, he said, is a crucial factor in realising Thailand’s aspiration in becoming the region’s cargo hub.
