Non-aviation services could make more revenue for AoT

Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) is aiming to sharply increase its revenue from non-aeronautical sources, which could overtake contributions from its current main money-spinners aircraft landing and parking fees.

The operator of Thailand’s six international airports is working to raise the percentage of non-aeronautical revenue from 40% at present to 50% in the next fiscal year, and to 60% of its total in three to four years.

Instrumental to the strategic change will be revenue from Suvarnabhumi Airport where charges such as space rentals, service charges, concession fees and profit sharing have been the subject of criticism from airlines, retailers and other tenants.

Train connecting new international airport with central Bangkok to open next year

A rail system connecting central Bangkok to the new international airport is 40 percent complete and is scheduled for completion in November 2007.

The Airport Link to Suvarnabhumi Airport will include a direct express train that will take 15 minutes from the Makkasan train station, which connects to the city’s mass transit subway system, said a statement from Airports of Thailand.

Another train will make eight stops throughout the city, taking 30 minutes to travel the 28 kilometers (17 miles) to the airport and linking with both the subway and Skytrain systems in Bangkok.

No Ceremonies for Don Muang close

There will be no major ceremonies for Don Muang International Airport when it closes on September 27 after more than eight decades of service.

Instead, officials will host a religious ceremony on the last day in honour of Field Marshall Prince  Chakrabpongse Bhuvanath of Phitsanulok, the founding father of aviation in Thailand.

On September 27, many airport employees will be involved with moving efforts, according to Airports of Thailand Public Co., Ltd. (AOT) President Chotisak Asapaviriya,  all essential equipment and gear is expected to be at the new facility by September 28 when Suvarnabhumi Airport takes over as Bangkok’s international airport.
