CDRM special committee finds Suvarnabhumi prepared

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

A day after being appointed chairman of a special committee to oversee Suvarnabhumi Airport’s opening, Air Chief Marshal Chalit Pukbhasuk, head of the Royal Thai Air Force, inspected the new facility and concluded it ready for the September 28 opening.

The Council for Democratic Reform under Constitutional Monarchy (CDRM) created the committee to ensure the airport’s first day goes well.

Suvarnabhumi began offering passenger service on September 15 [as part of the airport’s soft opening]. We encountered some minor problems, which have since been solved,” said Somchai Sawasdeepon, the airport’s general manager, who briefed Marshal Chalit during the inspection.

Malaysian Airline System (MAS) will start passenger and cargo flight operations at the new Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok and cease operations at the Don Muang airport on Sept 28.

In a statement on Sept 26, MAS said it would operate only one of its three daily Kuala Lumpur-Bangkok return frequencies on Sept 28.

It said it would double the frequency on Sept 29 and from Sept 30, MAS would reinstate its three daily flights on the route.

It said MAS passengers travelling out of Suvarnabhumi airport for the next few weeks are advised to report early for check-in to ensure timely completion of departure formalities.

Civil Aviation Training Centre to supplying airport employee training

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

The Civil Aviation Training Centre (CATC) and Airports of Thailand Plc. (AOT) will sign a memorandum of understanding in October to expand human resource development efforts.

By the end of the year, CATC will instruct about 200 people, who will then be qualified to work at Suvarnabhumi or airlines operating in Thailand. With new facilities in the northeastern provinces of Khon Kaen and Roi-et, CATC hopes to train 300 people next year.

Training focuses on areas like air traffic control and ground service management.
